Drywall Repair 101: Common Issues and Solutions

Drywall is one of the most common materials used in homes, but it’s also prone to damage. From small dents to larger holes, here’s a guide to common drywall issues and how to fix them.

1. Small Dents and Dings

Minor dents are often caused by accidental bumps or furniture hitting the wall. To repair, simply fill the dent with a lightweight spackle using a putty knife. Once it’s dry, sand it smooth and apply a coat of paint to blend with the surrounding wall.

2. Nail Pops

Nail pops happen when drywall nails or screws loosen and push through the surface. To fix, remove the protruding nail and drive a new drywall screw into the wall just below the old nail hole. Cover the screw head with spackle, let it dry, sand it smooth, and repaint.

3. Cracks in the Drywall

Cracks can occur from settling or shifting foundations. For small cracks, use a drywall compound to fill the gap, then apply a strip of drywall tape over it. Smooth it out with a putty knife, allow it to dry, sand it smooth, and paint over the repair.

4. Water Damage

Water-damaged drywall is a more serious issue. If the damage is minor, you can cut out the damaged section, replace it with a new piece of drywall, and tape and mud the seams. However, if the water damage is extensive, it’s best to replace the entire section and address the source of the water leak.

5. Holes in the Wall

For small holes (up to 2 inches), you can use a patch kit that includes a mesh patch and spackle. For larger holes, cut out the damaged drywall, insert a new piece, and tape and mud the seams. Once it’s dry, sand and paint the repaired area.
